We shape the working end of our 2810 tool with a tapered V-slot to separate the roller from its seat on the balance staff. The jaws slip into the narrow gap between the roller table and the staff hub. Hand pressure on the sides drives the wedge and lifts the piece square.

V-slot profile

The tapered slot narrows to enter the gap under the roller table. As the sides draw together, the slope lifts the table straight along the staff without canting it.

Fine jaw tips

We grind the jaw lips thin so they reach into close clearances around the balance hub. The edges are dressed flat to seat firmly against the underside of the roller.

Hand pressure control

The spring body yields directly to your fingers. You feel the initial resistance of the friction fit give way as you squeeze the flanks of the frame.

Bench storage

Keep the tool in a tray compartment away from loose files and heavy drivers. The ground faces of the slot remain true when spared contact with rough steel.
