Bench jobCleaning and finishing

A fresh piece of dry cleaning putty sits on the bench next to the movement holder. We prepare reference 6033 to take up excess oil from train wheel pivots, lift dust off dials, and clear smudges without liquid baths. You tear off a working piece, shape a point, and touch the surface directly.

Shaping the point

Knead a small piece between clean fingers to expose a fresh surface, then roll it to a fine point for balance pivots and train jewels.

Taking up residue

The putty grabs dry dust, stray lint, and surplus lubricant without leaving a film across bridges or plates. It lifts particles on contact.

Working without solvents

Use it dry directly on dial faces and hands where liquids would compromise old varnish, printed lettering, or luminous paint.

Bench storage

Keep the bulk bar wrapped in its greaseproof paper when not in hand. Fresh putty stays pliable, while loaded points are pinched off and discarded.

Keeping the bench clean

Cleaning putty and what it lifts, why solvents are kept away from some surfaces, the point of a bench mat and a tray with a lip, cloths and brushes, and how tools are put away so the next job starts on a clear board.
