Bench jobSetting up the bench

We mold the body of the 4040-P from a rigid synthetic material rather than metal. The stepped jaws open along central guide posts to take larger watch movements, seating the mainplate flat while you work on the train or motion works. Flipping the frame exposes a second jaw profile for alternate edge configurations.

Synthetic jaw body

The synthetic composition provides a firm hold without raw metal-on-metal contact at the movement rim. It stays rigid under hand pressure while screws are driven home or bridge screws loosened.

Reversible clamping faces

Both sides of the frame feature machined steps. One face accommodates conventional plate rims, while reversing the holder presents a different stepped depth for calibres with lower bridge profiles or wider calendar rings.

Working size range

The screw mechanism expands to take calibres from 20 mm up to 43 mm across. You adjust the knurled center nut until the jaws meet the plate edges squarely without bowing the assembly.

Bench stability

The broad base keeps the movement level on the bench mat during assembly and oiling. It leaves the dial side clear beneath when inverted, preventing hands or dial posts from bearing weight.
